Swami Vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda (Bengali: স্বামী বিবেকানন্দ; born Narendranath Datta; 12 January 1863 – 4 July 1902) was an Indian-Bengali Hindu monk, philosopher, and religious teacher from British India who served as the principal disciple of the mystic Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Renowned for his role in globalizing Hindu thought, Vivekananda delivered keynote addresses at the 1893 Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago, where he articulated principles of religious tolerance and the unity of faiths, drawing from Vedanta philosophy.
Sister Nivedita
Sister Nivedita, born Margaret Elizabeth Noble (28 October 1867 – 13 October 1911), was an Irish schoolteacher who became a devoted disciple of Swami Vivekananda and dedicated her life to India’s spiritual and national awakening after meeting him in London in 1895. Renaming herself “Nivedita,” meaning “the dedicated one,” upon her initiation in 1898, she arrived in Calcutta that year and established a girls’ school on 13 November 1898 in the Bagbazar area, aiming to provide education to underprivileged Hindu girls amid colonial rule.
